So what makes a home smart? An extensive vocabulary? Fluency in five languages? Advanced math skills?
When someone says a home device is "smart", it simply means that it can connect to and be interacted with from the internet.
As Airbnb manager, we found that adopting smart tech like locks, thermostats, and wi-fi setups has allowed us to maximize our hosting skills in a new way. If you're looking for a more modern solution to becoming a smarter Airbnb host, smart devices are your best bet for securing your space, making it more comfortable for guests, and making remote hosting much easier.
With the growth of the consumer-based smart home industry, getting your hands on these devices is a breeze. Whether it's at your local retailer or online, you can find a wide range of tech brands and affordable devices to best match your hosting needs.
We've gone through a lot of trial and error when it comes to installing devices at our units, so we'll let you in on our favorites to save you the hassle.
This lock allows us to generate unique, duration-based lock codes for every guest that comes in and out of our units. We can also lock and unlock doors remotely. We've found that guests have trouble figuring out how to activate touch screen locks, so the push buttons are great. It also has a backup key hole that let's guest use a traditional key if need be. We rarely have to instruct guests to use this, but knowing it's there in case of emergency gives us peace of mind.
The Ecobee3 Lite is great for regulating the temperature in our units. We can quickly access it remotely to make the unit more comfortable for guests or set it to an energy savings mode when our units are vacant. It's pretty intuitive to use, even for our guest's that have never used a smart thermostat.
If there is one thing that guests love to complain about, it's slow internet. Compared to traditional setups, Samsung's SmartThings Wi-fi gives our units great internet coverage and speed. As hosts, it also allows us to keep an eye on internet status so we can ensure that guests stay connected.
Smart home devices are an investment that's pretty recoupable with the rates you are able to charge on your listings as a result of related improvements.
Even if you decide to stop Airbnbing, having modern smart home technology installed in your property will increase its value if you ever decide to sell. What do you think about Airbnb hosts using smart devices in their homes? Send us an email to share your thoughts!
